AntiAgeing Skin Care Products What About Skin Care Products

Peoples' preoccupation with anti-ageing skin care products that claim to make you look younger is not surprising; it is only natural that as people get older they want to continue looking young so will use products that help them achieve this. Skin is important so a great deal of effort goes into the preparation of beauty products especially those that increase the production of collagen, which is the primary protein in skin; twenty-five per cent of the skin's protein is collagen. Collagen is related to other anti-ageing substances found in the body and other substances; called antioxidants, they help flush out toxins from the body and help reduce the signs of aging. Probably the best known of these anti-oxidants is vitamin C although no-one really knows just how much we should have each day. The problem with vitamin C derived skin care treatments is they can become oxidized when exposed to the atmosphere, often even before they are used. To get around this some skin care treatments are based on derivatives of vitamin C, which are more stable and less expensive.

These alternative products are not as effective as vitamin C but vitamin E and lipoic acid are anti-oxidants and are now being used. Vitamin E is an antioxidant and component of human blood whose purpose is to help increase the body's immune system against diseases including cancer. On the other hand, lipoic acid or alpha-lipoic acid is necessary for energy production which keeps us alive; it is in every human cell and another function is to repair skin damage caused by the normal ageing process. Another group of products used to reduce the visible signs of ageing are phytochemicals which are compounds extracted from various plants and used in many anti-ageing skin care products.

Like lipoic acid, phytochemicals help reduce the occurrence of cancers such as prostate, breast and colon cancers. For some time now it has also been known that the vitamins B5, B6 and B12 also have anti-ageing skin care properties. This is a vast area that has the potential for many new anti-ageing skin care products and services in the future but research needs to continue.

Although current regimes are effective, there are still many challenges to finding better and more efficient ways to combat the effects of time. In time it is hoped that less expensive and more reliable anti-ageing skin care products will become available for a larger number of people to use. Fortunately there is a number of natural anti-ageing regimes that can be carried out that do not rely on science.

Drinking plenty of water, getting a good night's sleep, exercising regularly, maintaining healthy eating habits and keeping stress at bay are an essential means of delaying the ageing process.
